This fall, join Bela Shayevich to read and discuss Aesthetics of Resistance, a novel by Peter Weiss (1916–1982). Weiss was a German playwright, dramatist, visual artist, filmmaker, and novelist. Best known for his plays, his work combines radical artistic experimentation with equally strident political commitment.
Set on the eve of World War II, Aesthetics of Resistance attempts to capture the social and aesthetic life of those who fought fascism in that era, exploring the affinity between political resistance and art. It has been called "the book of the century."
Participants will meet four times over Zoom on September 22nd, October 20th, November 24th and December 22nd, from 10:00-11:30 AM CST. They are encouraged to buy a copy of Aesthetics of Resistance ahead of time through the Workshops for Gaza bookstore site.
Bela Shayevich is a writer, artist, and Russian-to-English translator. She recently received an MFA in Nonfiction Writing from the University of Iowa, where she is Visiting Faculty in Residence in the Translation Department.
